Colruyt Temse expands its space and focus on sustainability

The Colruyt store in Temse went through a major renovation in 2024. The site on Vrijheidstraat had become too small, and parking was also a challenge. Therefore, a renovation was necessary to provide more space. We achieved this in a particularly sustainable way.

Maximising the available space

Although the space at the Temse site was limited, Colruyt Group Real Estate took a creative approach to enlarge the store. The existing space was used as efficiently as possible by our designers. As a result, customers can now shop in a store of 1,800 m². The store space increased by no less than 25%, and the shopping route is now faster and more efficient. Shopping at Colruyt Temse has become simpler, smoother and more pleasant than ever before.

  • A milestone: The first Colruyt store with CO²-negative façade bricks, made from 80% waste streams and hardened with CO².

  • Urban mining applied: demolition materials such as concrete, asphalt and metal reused for foundations and other applications.

  • Energy-efficient solutions: LED lighting with sensors (30% energy saving), 75% waste heat recovery, rainwater for toilets, and solar panels for green energy.

  • Expansion to 1,800 m² of store space (+25%).

  • 76 covered parking spaces under the store.

  • 6 charging points for electric vehicles (1 fast charger, 2 regular chargers).

  • Underground bike parking for (cargo)bikes.

It's all inside the store

To optimise the space and reduce any disruption, it was decided to move as many activities as possible inside the building. Deliveries now take place inside the building itself, reducing the surrounding noise. Additionally, there is now an underground car park with more spaces, including six parking spots for electric cars. These are equipped with 1 fast charger and 2 regular chargers, allowing customers to do their shopping and leave with a full battery. Cyclists also have a place to park their (cargo)bikes safely and dry in the covered parking area.

New standard for sustainability

Sustainability was at the heart of the entire renovation. During the demolition of the store in Temse, materials such as concrete, asphalt, bricks and metal were carefully sorted to determine what could be reused. For example, demolition concrete was crushed on-site to create gravel, which was then used to make new concrete for the foundations. Temse also features a first, as it is the first store built with bricks that are 80% made from waste materials.

A sustainable store on the outside, but inside Colruyt Group Real Estate also opted for energy-efficient and sustainable materials. LED lighting with sensors (30% more energy-efficient) was installed, the waste heat from the refrigeration system is reused to heat the store, rainwater is used in the toilets, and solar panels provide the store with green energy.
